Redecorating Your Little Girl’s Room for a Teen or Tween

When girls are little, lots of parents and caregivers like to decorate their rooms with pastel colors, like pink, lavender, pale yellow, and white. Many of the quilt and comforter sets offered for this age group feature these types of colors. Little girls love princesses, fairies, flowers, hearts, horses, and the like; and parents often love them too for their little girls’ rooms. Kind of a soft stepping-up from the baby years, with all that soft-color decor and pastel colors.

But as girls get older, their tastes change. Girls entering the tween and teen years might want something brighter and trendier. The easiest way to upgrade the room is probably to get a new comforter or quilt set; and there are lots to choose from.

Patterns for this age group tend towards more intense or darker colors rather than pastels, with bright or bold usually being the rule. Hearts and flowers are still popular, but this time they’re hot pink or neon orange instead of pastel pink or lavender. And let’s add peace signs, geometric patterns, and contrasting colors that pop. It’s sort of like retro 1960’s and 70’s with a cool modern twist.

If you decide to update the room to reflect your girl’s age, you might have to repaint the walls. Whether or not this is necessary depends on the color of the new bedding and the condition of the old paint job. If your new bed set has colors in the same family as the wall color, you probably don’t have to repaint, unless the walls are really beat up. For example, if the walls are pastel pink and you pick a bright pink and purple comforter, that will match. Or if you have pale yellow walls and your new comforter set is lime green, that will also work. Of course, white walls go with almost everything. It’s really up to you, and how much work you want to put into it.

You can get matching curtains, maybe some new posters, a few trendy accessories, and you’re good. She’ll be off and running.

Of course, this time your daughter will want to have a say as to what her new room will look like. When she was younger, you probably picked it, or at least gave her a few choices, all of which you were OK with. Now it may be time to back off and let her express herself; in fact, to encourage it. That’s what being a teen is all about. Her room should be a refuge for her, a place she loves to hang out in, where she can get away from the pressure of being a teen. So give her some choices and see what she’ll come up with. It’ll probably be great.

Redecorating is also a way to ritualize a new stage for both of you and celebrate her growing up. After all, it’s going to happen anyway; might as well go with the flow and have fun. So go for it, and enjoy your more grown-up girl!

Bedroom Decorating – 8 Easy Ideas You Can Use Now to Create a Garden Theme Room For Your Little Girl

Every little girl is a princess. Why not set her imagination free by designing a beautiful garden theme room that she can enjoy for years to come? It can be done quickly and inexpensively when you follow the eight easy ideas provided in this article.

1. Use floral wallpaper stickers or paint stem flowers on her walls.

There are many different floral theme wallpaper stickers available for purchase today. A great choice would be a floral wallpaper sticker that includes long stems that can be applied to your daughter’s walls to start the theme of a growing garden in her room. If you are more artistic, you can paint the stems and flowers directly onto the wall. Get your child involved if she is old enough to help with the artistry.

2. Use your daughter’s own artwork to decorate the room.

Ask your daughter to draw individual pictures of her favorite things found in a garden. Flowers, butterflies, bees and caterpillars are a few examples that come to mind. Transfer your child’s works of art onto her bed using iron on transfer sheets. This can be done by scanning the artwork into your computer and then printing it directly onto a transfer sheet. Next, iron the transfer onto a white piece of fabric and use fabric glue to attach the finished images to a large rectangle of fabric. You should space the transfers approximately 1″ apart. Frame your child’s drawings by sewing on color coordinated buttons and then stitch the large piece of fabric to a solid color comforter or quilt.

3. Create tulip pockets on a plain colored pillow sham.

Tulip pockets can easily be created using polka dot fabric and then cutting out the shape of a tulip. Next, sew the tulips onto a plain pillow sham and then embellish them with ribbons, buttons and bows for a truly custom look.

4. Make a beautiful garden style window treatment.

Use an ordinary white roller shade as a canvas for your garden. First use a pencil to outline the floral shapes that you would like to appear on the window treatment. Next, paint the background area of the window shade green for contrast. Do this using a foam brush and cost effective acrylic paints. Finally, add color by filling in your flower shapes in coordinating colors of paint. Add soft sheers to frame the window and add floral appliques to the sheers for your own customized look.

5. Embellish picture frames with flowers to help complete your garden theme.

Cut out and glue felt flowers onto the corners of photo frames. Use floral artwork in your frames, or, for a more personalized look, frame more of your child’s own art. Your child will take real pride from having their own custom artwork prominently displayed as a part of their special room.

6. Frame a round or oval mirror with a boa to create a mirror for your princess.

Find a child’s costume boa at a discount or crafts store. Use fabric glue or a hot glue gun to adhere the boa to the perimeter of the mirror.

7. Make a unique desk or vanity by adhering pink sparkle fabric around a rectangular table.

The fabric can be stapled on by pleating the fabric around the outside of the table. Cover the table top with fabric and add a piece of glass. Have your child make construction paper flowers, a cut-out princess crown and any other photos or drawings that she would like and then place them under the glass so that she can show off her own personal style.

8. Use the sparkle fabric to cover a cork bulletin board.

First, cover an inexpensive bulletin board with the sparkle fabric by pulling the fabric tight around the edges and stapling into the back of the frame. You can add 3-D homemade butterflies to the bulletin board for a more finished look. Have your child find photos of real butterflies on the internet and then print them out on matte photo paper. Cut out the butterfly shapes and fold them so that their wings extend outward, bringing them to life. Pin the butterflies to your cork bulletin board to finish the design.

Any of these eight ideas, or even all of them, would be great cost effective alternatives for creating a bedroom fit for a princess.
